REVIEW: Camping Sandaya, Lake Annecy

Camping Sandaya La Nubliere is a large campsite located on the shores of Lake Annecy.

We booked independently through the Sandaya website and stayed for 4 nights in a canvas lodge (tent/ glamping).

The Good

The Location

Lake Annecy

We loved the location of the campsite, right on the shore of Lake Annecy. It is in a place called Doussard, which is at the opposite end of the Lake to Annecy (the town). The campsite has its own direct access to the lake, and there is also a public lake beach at Doussard and a jetty/ marina. There were lots of families who had brought their own paddle boards and kayaks, which looked fantastic.

Being so close to the lake when we were camping was great. We really loved being able to go for a quick swim or walk in the evening by the water.

The views from the lake were really nice, with green mountains surrounding us and a nature reserve with a nice walk, right next to the campsite. It felt very relaxing ( in the daytime – more on that later!)

We were also a 2 minute drive from a bike rental place, which was great as we got e- bikes and toured the lake with the kids one of the days.

It was a 30-minute scenic drive to Annecy (the town). We went in to Annecy quite a lot, but we were glad to be staying a  little further out where it was less busy.

The location was the best thing by far about the campsite. It was really good camping right on the shore of the lake with amazing views.

The Accomodation

The “lodge” is the name Camping Sandaya has given to this canvas tent set up. We have stayed in similar before ( at eurocamp) and really liked this one. It was well priced, spacious, and had 3 bedrooms in it, with 2 sets of bunk beds, and 6 beds it total.

It had a fridge freezer, cooking area with gas hob and a microwave.  This tent even had its own shower and toilet, which were so good; the shower was better than our shower at home!

It felt luxurious not to have to go to the shower block for a wash or the loo all the time. So this accommodation gets a big thumbs up. The only thing I would like to add is that a heater would have been nice as it got chilly in the mountains at night, although we did have plenty of extra blankets provided.

Something to consider

The noise

It was so noisy at night and it was really hard to sleep, even with ear plugs and the white noise going! We expect some campground noise, but the loud talking, music, and partying seemed excessive.

Blogs I have read on camping in France say to expect some noise as French campsites are generally noisy affairs, however, we have stayed a few campsites in France now, and we did find this noise a bit next level, and it has put me off.

It did surprise me as the general vibe seemed very family orientated with lots of families milling about. I have since read on trip advisor that the campsite has people who walk right through it to access the lake, so maybe that is what was happening. Or maybe it was a family party!

Who knows, but in any case, the noise was not managed by the campsite, and although it wasn’t a massive problem, it did negatively affect us during our stay.

Useful Information

Located in Doussard, a 30-minute drive from Annecy.

We were out of season for the kids club, but they do have one that runs daily in the high season.

There is a play area and water splash pad for the kids, as well as direct lake access.

The nearest supermarket is a Carrefour Contact (smaller version but still well equipped) a 5 minute drive away in Doussard. There is also a little shop on the campsite, and a restaurant and bar.

Overall, we enjoyed it here, but we will think twice about rebooking due to the noise and the lack of management of the noise from the campsite.

The location of the campsite is stunning and convenient, the accommodation we found to be better than expected, and the fabulous shower was a real treat. There were nice facilities and the kids enjoyed the play areas, but I think we will try and find a quieter campsite the next time we visit beautiful Annecy.
